Melanin - A dark brown coloring found in the body, especially in the skin and hair. Produced by special skin cells that are sensitive to sunlight, melanin protects the body by absorbing ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Note: The amount of melanin present in the skin determines the color of a person's complexion: people with a large amount have dark skin, whereas those with very little have fair skin. Melanin is also responsible for tanning.

Telengiectesia - Dilatation of smallest tubes carrying blood in body causing elevated dark red blotches on the skin.

Melasma - A tan discoloration of a woman's face that is associated with pregnancy or with the use of oral contraceptives

Psoriasis - A non contagious inflammatory skin disease characterized by recurring reddish patches covered with silvery scales.

Vitiligo - A skin disorder characterized by smooth, white patches on various parts of the body, caused by the loss of the natural pigment

Hypertrophic scars - Excessive growth of scar of any kind

Keloids - A red, raised formation of scar tissue caused by excessive tissue repair in response to trauma or surgical incision.

Striae - Stretch marks associated with pregnancy or obesity

Vascular (vessels) - Tubes or ducts in body that carry fluids like blood etc.

Hemoglobin - the oxygen-carrying pigment of red blood cells that gives them their red color and serves to convey oxygen to the tissues
